In this dynamic flow workshop to benefit My Sisters Place (http://www.mysistersplacedc.org/), we work with embodied practices of taking up more space in our breath, in our bodies, and ultimately in our lives. Expect to get sweaty, stand in a new way and positively take up more space in all directions.
About My Sisters Place:  As DC’s oldest domestic violence shelter, My Sisters Place has responded to the community’s evolving needs since 1979. My Sisters Place is the only domestic violence shelter in DC that offers a full continuum of care from immediate crisis on a hotline through transitional-to-permanent housing. This continuum ensures that victims are not re-traumatized by having to repeat their painful stories to numerous counselors.

Get ready for the steamy D.C. summer with a cooling yoga practice and Ayurvedic techniques to keep you calm and balanced. As we move through summer, the radiant energy of the sun creates a hot, sharp, and bright environment around us. If we let too much of these qualities influence us, we can become more irritable and easily angered or frustrated. As heat starts to accumulate in the body, we may experience inflammation, skin rashes, heartburn, and other heat related ailments.

In this workshop, we’ll learn to balance summer’s fiery qualities with a yoga practice that removes excess heat from the body, Ayurvedic practices to keep you calm, and food recommendations to stay cool inside.

As we delve more deeply into Fall, the air stirs up, and all around us is change. Just as the trees release heat through their vibrant fall colors, we too let go of summer for the lightness and coolness of Fall. Fall is dry, light, and mobile. But too much of these qualities can lead to dryness in the body, like joint pain and dry skin, and can over stimulate the mind, leading to increased worry and anxiety. In this workshop, we will start with a slow and rooted standing balancing and hip opening practice. Then we will review home practices like abhyanga and other daily rituals to get you ready for the coming winter. Lastly, we will discuss tastes and foods to increase and reduce in your fall diet.

Join Kat for this workshop to gain a greater awareness of this continuous process in your own body to improve your quality of well-being. Then, we will explore different ways of breathing and their effects on the body. Finally, we will work with breathing to enhance movement.

Part 2: Prana and Pranayama
In yogic philosophy, the breath is the link between body and mind. In this workshop we will explore this link on many levels. First, we will take a basic look at the energetic body from a yogic point of view. Next, we will examine the effects of breathing on the energetic body. Finally, we will work with specific pranayamas to energize, calm and balance.
Part 3: Ayurvedic Pranayama
In this workshop, we will enjoy breathing exercises from an ayurvedic perspective to enhance well-being and happiness.
